What Is Cyclospora and Why Is It Dangerous?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that infects the intestines and causes cyclosporiasis, a severe gastrointestinal illness. Unlike typical food poisoning that resolves within a day or two, cyclospora infections can last weeks or even months without proper treatment. The parasite is most commonly transmitted through contaminated fresh produce, particularly leafy greens, berries, and herbs that have come into contact with contaminated water during growing or processing.

Symptoms typically appear one to two weeks after ingestion, making it difficult for many victims to immediately identify the source of their illness. The 2026 Outbreak: What We Know

The current outbreak, one of the largest cyclosporiasis events ever documented in the United States, has been traced to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms and served at Taco Bell locations across multiple states. Federal and state health investigators, including the FDA and CDC, linked the contaminated lettuce to Taylor Farms’ facility in central Mexico.

As of August 3, 2026, more than 11,200 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported across at least nine states, including Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Two deaths have been confirmed, and nearly 200 hospitalizations have been reported in Michigan alone. Taylor Farms issued a voluntary recall of the implicated products on July 17, but by that point thousands had already been exposed.

This is not the first time Taylor Farms has been implicated in a major foodborne illness outbreak. In 2024, the company supplied contaminated slivered onions to McDonald’s that were linked to an E. coli outbreak resulting in one death and over 100 illnesses. The FDA found dozens of sanitation violations at the Taylor Farms facility responsible.

Symptoms of Cyclospora Infection

If you ate at a Taco Bell or consumed shredded iceberg lettuce from a restaurant or grocery store in recent weeks, watch for these symptoms:

• Watery diarrhea (often explosive and prolonged)
• Loss of appetite and significant weight loss
