About the Bendix Landfill Site

The Bendix Landfill is a six-acre site located in Green Island, Albany County, between Cohoes and Tibbetts Avenue. This facility was formerly owned by the Bendix Corporation, later passed to Allied Chemical / AlliedSignal, and eventually became part of Honeywell. Bendix used the site for industrial disposal between 1937 and 1975.

The Bendix company manufactured automotive, aerospace, and other industrial components, but this landfill site was primarily used as a dump for waste such as grinding dust, brake lining scrap, rejected linings, brake lining dust, and brake lining pellets. It is estimated that over the years 350,000 tons of waste were disposed of at this site, nearly 60% of it having been asbestos.

In the early years of operation, the Bendix plant produced about four times as much dust than solid waste. Between 1946 and 1969, the ratio of dust to solid waste dropped to 2:1. In 1973, pelletizing equipment turned loose dust into pellets which reduced further the volume of dust as compared to solids.

In the early years, the linings were constructed of nearly 100% asbestos. Over the years, asbestos composition dropped, but never below 50-60%.

Who was at risk of asbestos exposure at the Bendix Landfill Site?

Working at the Bendix site in Green Island, NY may have exposed workers to asbestos through:

  • Handling of raw materials, scraps, rejected brake products containing asbestos
  • Working in proximity to waste containing asbestos

In addition, both workers and anyone living nearby may have been exposed to asbestos by breathing the air containing asbestos fibers, or drinking water contaminated by asbestos.

The dangers of asbestos

Exposure to asbestos fibers (which can vary in size from microscopic to visible), either by inhalation or ingestion, can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other illnesses. The time between exposure and disease development, called the latency period, can take as long as 30-50 years before the appearance of symptoms.
