About Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company

In 1898, John Hays bought what used to be known as the Carlisle Manufacturing Company in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a manganese steel foundry that manufactured primarily railroad frogs and switches, changing its name a few years later to Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company. The company operated continuously for more than a century and became a major supplier of railroad components. The company shuttered down in 2023 after 125 years of operations reportedly due to their inability to compete among global competitors.

Frog Switch & Manufacturing building in Carlisle, PA

Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company was an industrial foundry that required large furnaces and heavy machinery for melting manganese and shaping it into railroad track components. This equipment operated in an intense heat environment and relied on asbestos components for their insulating and heat resistance properties.

Asbestos Exposure in Industrial Settings

Workers in machining and manufacturing settings faced exposure to asbestos from a number of industrial components including:

  • Insulation used on equipment, piping, or heating systems
  • Gaskets, packing, or seals found in industrial machinery
  • Brakes and clutches on lathes, drills, presses and other machining equipment
  • Dust from older building materials during maintenance or renovation

Exposure often occurred through routine tasks such as machine operation, repair, cleanup, or simply working near others who worked around asbestos-containing products.

How might you have been exposed to asbestos while working at Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company?

Workers at the facility could have been exposed to asbestos through normal course of daily activities including:

  • Foundry activities like melting, pouring, casting, and finishing
  • Maintenance of plant machinery
  • Boiler operations
  • Cleanup operations
  • Office work

During any of these activities, asbestos fibers may have been present in the air making them easily inhaled or ingested.

Which Workers of Frog, Switch & Manufacturing May Be at Risk?

Asbestos fibers are microscopic and can easily be released in the air through regular foundry operations, including through maintenance of the building facility itself. This means that everyone working at the facility is at risk including:

  • Foundry workers involved in melting, pouring, and casting steel
  • Workers tasked with finishing steel components
  • Maintenance workers including mechanics and electricians
  • Boiler operators
  • Laborers
  • Cleanup workers
  • Office staff

Also, family members of Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company’s employees may be at risk from activities like laundering their loved ones’ clothes or simply being in proximity of their loved ones who may have brought asbestos fibers home on their clothing or accessories.

There is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Any amount of exposure is enough to cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Also important to note is that the latency period between exposure and disease development can take several decades. Workers who were exposed in the 60s and 70s are at risk today.

If you worked at Frog, Switch & Manufacturing and developed mesothelioma or lung cancer, it is important to discuss your work history with an attorney experienced in asbestos investigations.
