Belluck Law has represented workers at the Sheridan Avenue Steam Station plant.

The Sheridan Avenue Steam Plant (also known as the Sheridan Hollow Steam Plant and often abbreviated as SASP) is a steam-generation plant in the Sheridan Hollow neighborhood of Albany, NY that has provided steam heat for the Empire State Plaza / State Capitol since about 1911.

Over its history, the steam plan used coal, oil, and now primarily natural gas as fuel; and for a short period of time, it operated a “trash-to-steam” incinerator which was closed in 1994.

Asbestos Use

Power plants and steam-generation facilities (boilers, piping, insulation, valves) were major users of asbestos. Asbestos was used as an insulator around pumps and valves, boilers, turbines, generators, and pipes. Workers who installed, repaired, or maintained boilers, steam lines, pumps and valves at power/steam plants were commonly exposed to asbestos. These were usually, but not exclusively, plant workers, contractors, and maintenance trades such as mechanics, pipefitters, electricians, and boiler mechanics.

Who is at risk of developing mesothelioma or lung cancer?

There is no safe level of asbestos exposure. Even one fiber could cause cancer. Asbestos fibers are microscopic and are easily inhaled or ingested. Those exposed to asbestos might not know they inhaled or ingested asbestos. Mesothelioma can take decades to develop after exposure to asbestos.
